CONSTRUCTION FLAUNT

Here I am a bit later than the usual Friday Flaunt which was cleverly thought up and implemented by Cinzia for members of Quilting Down Under to post their weekly efforts in reducing their UFO's and/or WIP's and bragging about it on their respective Blogs.

Since I relocated my small office cum sewing area from a small darkish room out to my large, light lounge/dining/kitchen room I enjoyed designing and laying out my new studio. My FF (Friday Flaunt) has been a long awaited movable Design Wall which I lost by having to move a collection of Quilting Magazines, books and a bit of fabric that are in 10 cubicle book cases stacked to the ceiling.

In case anyone needs a portable, lightweight yet sturdy Design Wall without the need for wall space, check out the following photos : - it was so easy ... it leans securely against the book case cubicles and can be moved out of the way

This is how I started. I braced 2 pieces of Styrofoam about 1 metre square with 2 pieces of Pine from Bunnings to act as supports.

(Please note my Supervisor at the top left of the photo)

Selleys All Fix is the glue I used that wouldn't melt the Styrofoam but would adhere to wood, because it's water based. At Bunnings there is a computer screen that tells you which glue will do what after you select what you want to stick together.

For some reason the second 'wall' I made needed some extra persuasion!! I remember it was a lot warmer so I turned on the fan nearby and think that caused the problem of the pine not staying stuck to the foam, so I had to engage some heavy help and leave overnight - suitcase of quilts, box of documents for archiving and 2 boxes of my books!!

These 2 walls are now wrapped in a flannel sheet each, are leaning against the wall of cubicles and have 1 almost finished Angles quilt top, and another in the making. I will re-charge the camera overnight and photograph that tomorrow with the walls in situ.

Morning World,

Woke this morning feeling fantastic - a glorious Autumn day - drizzly rain, overcast sky, clean air and SO glad that Summer is over!!

Here for your enjoyment is Part 1 of Student Angles Workshop photos. I know I have more, just have to keep trawling through hard drives to find them all !!

Hi everyone

It's been a wonderful typical week in the Solomon home!! Trouble is as gorgeous as ever, girlfriend last night saw a manifestation down my long passage confirming what I've known for a long time - my Angel Guides are with me at all time and equally important - I'm pain-free for the first time since - well - a long time!! Targetted medications are starting to break up my chronic sinus congestion and I can bend my head over without screaming.

While my Web Page www.anjiisolomon.com is being re-vamped, it's unaccessible. Not for long, as Kristien tells me today that it should be up and public by mid next week - woo hoo!!!

In the meantime, here is a sneak preview of the first new Angles quilt I have on offer as a new workshop.

"FOSSIL FERN FRENZY"

This was so much fun to make. I Angled a Charm pack of 100 FF's and just randomly stitched them throughout - what I call "Lucky Dipping"!! This is SO liberating and gives the brain and eyes a rest from matching colours, values, hues etc. I also trimmed them to rectangles instead of squares - I couldn't bring myself to trim off any more of those lusciuos colours than needed to be. Each unit measures unfinished - 3.5" x 4" so the quilt will finish a nice size to hang on a wall and be the focus point of the room - 30" x 35"

I will work on the Borders on the weekend - what do you think? A skinny black mottley FF and then a red? I love the challenge of adding borders to scrappy quilts VBG

Friday Flaunt

For someone who does not celebrate Christmas, I am going to be SO busy next week. Lots of big things (for me anyway) are happening. I have had a lot of fun creating the 2 table runners below for 2 very dear ladies who have helped me immensly in the last few months. They do do Christmas so using up the last of some classy Christmas Fabric Angles blocks, I finally decided on this layout to stitch together for one of the presents.

As you know with Anjii's Angles, there are MANY variations - these are the ones I could have chosen .....

The 2nd Table Runner needed some more Angle units made so I scrounged through my fabric and found a gorgeous goldy crackle number that worked perfectly. This Runner is bigger and I even had some left over units for 2 small placemats.

Well it's still Friday in Adelaide vbg Last week I helped Cyndy, a long time quilting friend of mine, layout an Angles quilt that she began at a workshop I taught a while back. Most workshops will have one student who wants to make a bigger quilt than the class sample. The quilt I was teaching was "Prizmatic" http://www.anjiisolomon.com/prizmatic.htm but Cyndy wanted a quilt for her QS Bed so she bought 4 times the amount of fabric on the requirements list plus a fudge factor!! Those who have taken an Anjii's Angles workshop with me, know first hand the design potential of the Angle units and how many quilt designs are possible by simple twist here or turn there!! I love it when students create thier own quilts from the class sample - there's no desire on my part to have clones of my quilts - ever.!!

Well these are a few of the options Cyndy and I came up with for her quilt. Keep in mind that this in only half her quilt but you can see how 4 of these will create a very stunning quilt that as I said to Cyndy, 'I was prepared to change my bedroom curtains for it' if she didn't like it once it was finished!!!

The photos don't quite do the quilt justice - it's a very deep and sultry collection of fabrics in burgandies, soft lettuce green and dusky pinks

The above layout, kept the dark squares of the four patches crossing diagonally with the dark burgandy Angle units forming a loop-de-loop with little pointy ears - don't you love my ability to descirbe so creatively what's in my head - be worried, very worried!!!! The above version still has the loop-de-loop but I turned the units alongside the diagonal 4 patches. This version is the same as the first example but with the 4 patches all turned so that the green forms the diagonal. This brings a star into the centre of each quarter and also there will be a star in the centre of the quilt plus on the compass points into the border which she has decided to piece with rectangles filling in the gaps like on Prizmatic has with the half square triangles. This has been a fantastic big step back into Angling and quite honestly, I couldn't wait for her to come over and take it off my design wall so that I could start with a quilt myself. Hi all WOW - comments and followers ! Thank you for all the support ... how blessed am I to have such wonderful friends. Thank you again. I uploaded or is it downloaded (?) photos off my camera from my weekend in Sydney. Of course no photos of me, only the fabulous views around the Harbour from the ferries I jumped on and off of for 3 hours and relaxing around the Rocks. Can you see the climbers right at the top of the Sydney Harbour Bridge aka The Coathanger? Click on the photo for a larger version - hope it's not too big and slow to load.... let me know if it is and I'll downsize it (after I work out how to :) ) I know it's been said many times by locals and tourists alike - the Sydney Opera House is a truly awesome building from all Angles (pardon the pun)

The most amazing high speed jet boats were looping around the ferries along with a Pirate Ship !!! LOL
